Virginia Veteran Named New 40&8 National Commander
INDIANAPOLIS Oct 2014 The national Forty & Eight veterans organization is pleased to announce Michael Wood of Richmond, Virginia, was elected Chef de Chemin de Fer, or national commander, of the Forty & Eight at its 95th annual national convention, on September 27, 2014, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Wood, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, served in Vietnam in the 1st Recon Battalion, United States Marine Corps. His awards include the the Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm, plus USMC Parachutist, Rifle Expert and Pistol Expert Badges.
Chef de Chemin de Fer Wood has been active in veterans’ fraternal organizations for nearly three decades. A member of the Forty & Eight since 1990, Wood has held command and leadership positions at the local, state and national levels; including Virginia State Commander, National Child Welfare Director, Sous Chef de Chemin de Fer, and as National Director of Carville Star, a unique longstanding Forty et Eight program that helped lead the fight against Hanson’s Disease (Leprosy).
Mike and and his wife Sandra live in Richmond Virginia where he owns a financial services company.
The Forty & Eight, founded in 1920, is a charitable honor society of American veterans. Its programs include Nurses Training, Child Welfare, Flags for First Graders, Carville Hansens Disease Center support, VA Voluntary Service programs, and programs supporting American troops returning from war zones. --- The group’s terminology and customs, unique among veteran organizations, derives from the experience of American troops in France during the First World War.
